This past weekend I was privileged to get to see inside the character of two very special young ladies, two of my great nieces Clair and Allyson. First there was Clair who is a beautiful young girl, quiet and shy. She is just 7 y.o. She has been so quiet in the past that you would hardly know she is around. However, we went to her brother's football game last week and she is a cheerleader. I was mesmerized watching her cheer. I could not believe how animated she was. She was amazing! Now, I know I am her great aunt, BUT I am telling you she was the absolute best cheerleader in the pack. She was precise with her arms and legs and LOUD, so loud you could hear her above all the others. She was everything a cheerleader should be. I was so proud of her. Don't ask me what brought about the change. She is still relatively quiet and shy, but not nearly so much as before. We went to a Rodeo this weekend and she sat in my lap and we talked together and I am getting to "KNOW" her a little more each time we talk. She shared with me a few things going on at school and some "STUFF" she was feeling about playground time. It may not have seemed to be much in the grand scheme of things, but in her little life, it was very important.
Now at the Rodeo, my other little grand niece, Allyson, was a participant in the barrel racing competition. She was a little doll sitting on that pony with a pink shirt and big ole' black cowboy hat. She had on pink socks and there was a zebra blanket under the pony's saddle. When she came out of the shoot, the crowd when absolutely crazy. They stood to their feet and cheered wildly while she rounded each barrel perfectly, not really fast, but perfectly and with great concentration. Then she kicked that pony and rode out of the arena in a cloud of dust. That little girlfriend is a ball of fire, is afraid of nothing and is ready to strike out on any new adventure at only 5 years old. Yet, she can sit quietly at her mom's beauty salon and fix the hair on her "Barbie Hair Salon" head and be perfectly satisfied. She is a young girl with a complex personality and will be a joy to "get to know".
SO, when you see your little nieces and nephews running around screaming and hollerin' during the holidays, grab one of them by the scruff of the neck, sit down somewhere for a few minutes and say, "Hey, come on I want to know ya!" (comonawanoya if you have not already figured out the title of the blog). Who knows, you might be like me and be genuinely surprised at what comes out of the mouths of those babes!
